The Adventures of “Radio Bob”

by Lane Steger (2025-01-27)

Back in 1949 a small booklet containing a picture novel entitled The adventures of Radio Bob (de Radio Avonturen van Handige Bob) was revealed by de Muiderkring, who also printed Radio Bulletin. The full title of the booklet is De Avonturen van Handige Radio Bob. Figure 4 The editors of De Muiderkring heavily re-used their own material. Quite a lot of money for such a thin booklet, particularly considering that apart from the noble motives, clearly the main goal of the book was to interest young people for electronics so that the Muiderkring may promote extra Radio Bulletins and AMROH merchandise. During the recent two many years, electronics has undergone an amazing improvement: from something very special, costly, and fascinating, it has turn out to be a black box which is fabricated by somebody in China, at a value so low that generally it's simply little greater than a consumable. The story itself is just not very special, however the story breaths the atmosphere of the fifties. Undoubtedly that is the explanation why every part related to Radio Bulletin and AMROH from the fifties and sixties has such a very special meaning to many electronics hobbyists of my age and older. The analysis report cites some attention-grabbing quotes from a datasheet, or pamphlet because it is known as within the report that accompanied the Westectors: - A particular growth of the Westinghouse metallic rectifiers, the Westector, is intended for the rectification of H.F.currents.

A.J. Heins van der Ven wrote a Philips Research Report entitled Metingen aan den Westinghouse metaalgelijkrichter voor hoogfrequentstroomen Westector (Measurements on the Westinghouse metal rectifier for high frequency currents Westector). On the sixth of November 1919, the Dutch radio pioneer Steringa Idzerda, transmits a Soirée Musicale from his radio production plant in Den Haag. The confusion on its actual working didn't forestall Bell Labs from forging forward with the manufacturing of copper-oxide rectifiers, referred to as varistors, on an industrial scale. The brochure is called AMROH Bulletin, it incorporates footage and descriptions of gramophones, loudspeakers, filament resistors and many others. Several numbers seem, and in 1932 AMROH Bulletin begins to seem as a periodical to which people can subscribe for one guilder per year for twelve numbers. The one different reference to Radio Bob that I was capable of finding was within the December number of 1949, the same year Radio Bob was printed. It's the story of Radio Bob, who after having built his own crystal set receiver encounters an adventure with a gang of smugglers.

When, in the direction of the top of the conflict it grew to become difficult to get anode batteries, the crystal set receiver of my father (using a cats whisker) was used to hearken to Radio Vrij Oranje. My father as an illustration served for three years as a radio communications officer. The invoice of supplies for Robs receiver is 23.18 guilders (page 10 of Radio Bob). That is why some time in the past I determined to scan the whole booklet to save it for future generations. Ever since I've my very own net site, it has been my plan to spend a web page on it. At the same time, individuals heard for the primary time of the technical progress that had been made by the allies during the conflict. Even with none motion of the detector, a delicate spot would wear down over time in order that a brand new delicate spot needed to be found. Over the years I had nearly forgotten the e-book, when some years in the past I discovered it again. The entire interval might be characterized as a interval of optimism, enthusiasm and surprise over all the brand new developments. My first recollection of it was throughout a period when my father was in hospital for a period of about seven weeks.

This story about my father is somewhat exemplary for the electronic hobby scene within the post-battle interval in Holland. My grand father for instance had a radio constructed within the family harmonium. It's comprehensible that developments like tv, radar, the atomic bomb and portable radio stimulated the imagination of younger and outdated. It is now laborious to imagine, but a narrative like Code should have virtually been science fiction to the readers of Wireless World in 1922. The story is about two friends and radio-fans, Roger Blake and Jack Faucet. Jack Faucet is younger doctor with an extensive practice in a small isolated country down. The copy of Radio Bob in my possession has always been closely damaged, literally worn down by studying. After printing of the booklet the directions outlined in Fig. 25 ought to be clear sufficient to allow you to make your personal copy of Radio Bob.
