Antibacterial and Antifungal Potential of Biologically Active Furan Analogues
Furan is an important heterocyclic compound and their derivatives possess important biological activities. A considerable amount of attention has been focused on synthesis of furan derivatives and tested them for diverse biological activities. The furan ring system is the basic skeleton of various compounds having cardiovascular activities. An iodinated lipophilic furan derivative is used in the therapy of ventricular and atrial fibrillation. These moieties are used as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor, antihyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticonvulsant, antitubercular, anticancer, antioxidant and antimalarial etc. Slight alteration in substitution pattern in furan nucleus causes noticeable difference in their biological activities. In this review, discuss about synthesis and various biological activities of furan derivatives.
