Assessment of the Pollution Vulnerability of Alluvial Aquifers Using the DRASTIC Method in El Hajeb Province (Morocco)

In recent years, the groundwater quality has deteriorated in many parts of Morocco as a result of agricultural expansion, solid waste disposal, and industrialization. The El Hajeb water table is also threatened by the development of agricultural and industrial activities. In order to protect this water table, we carried out a study on the mapping of vulnerability to pollution. The development of this map was carried out by application of the DRASTIC method by exploiting the functionalities offered by GIS. The analysis of this map highlights three major classes of vulnerability (low, medium and high). The medium class is the most dominant, because it covers almost the entire of El Hajeb province with a percentage of 85.3%. Therefore, a regular analytical monitoring of this water table is necessary in order to detect any kind of pollution of the water in question. The map thus elaborated can be used as a decision support tool for land-use planning, because it allows preserving the groundwater in El Hajeb province.
