Safety Assessment of Hand-Dug Well Water Samples from Selected Towns in Ekiti State, Nigeria

Abstract


The physico-chemical parameters and metallic analysis of water samples obtained from different hand-dug wells in Ikole Ekiti and Ode Ekiti both in Ekiti State were carried out. The analyses carried out include pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total hardness (TH), total alkalinity (TA), total dissolved solid (TDS), chloride (Cl-), calcium (Ca2+), potassium (K+), iron (Fe2+), zinc (Zn2+), copper (Cu2+), lead (Pb2+) and manganese (Mn2+). Results obtained, when compared with WHO and NAFDAC standard show that some parameters are found to be within the maximum permissible limit (MPL) of the two regulatory bodies thereby making them to
be safe and free for drinking and other domestic uses while some showed values above the water quality standards and make them unfit as drinking waters.
