Progress in Synthesis, Chemical Properties and Biological Activity of Biologically Diverse Thiophene Derivatives

Abstract


Thiophene is a potential entity in the growing chemical world of heterocyclic compounds possessing promising pharmacological activities. Various thiophene derivatives are synthesized by different synthetic methods. A variety of pharmacological importance of thiophene makes it a crucial pharmacophore in the medicinal chemistry. Some marketed drugs like clopidogrel acts by irreversible inhibition of P2Y12 receptor, Tioconazole, a fungicidal agent acts by inhibition of cell wall synthesis having thiophene core, ticlopedine used as antipletelets. Thus the synthesis of novel thiophene moieties with wider therapeutic consequences is a topic of interest for the medicinal chemist. In future the thiophene moiety and its derivatives draw a special attention of medicinal chemists to produce various scaffolds with potent biological activities and also as a lead pharmacophore of any compounds. This review provides various synthetic strategies of thiophene analogues and its major therapeutic field as exploited in the literature. It is expected that this review will be beneficial for the researchers.
